our personal recommendations from members and myself. However if you're looking for a decent Restaurant guide to Barcelona's restaurants check out BCN Restaurantes online guide |
| BUENO, BONITO, BARATO (referred to as "los tres Bs") |
| Good, nice and cheap restaurants....best to go at lunchtime during the week...don't arrive after 2pm if you don't want to stand in line! Note, as the price might indicate, do not expect to find "fine cuisine" at these places. They are good, but will not make it into any Michelin food guides. |
La
Dolca Herminia Carrer Magdalenes 27 |
| La
Fonda d'Escudellers Carrer Escudellers , 10 (Gotico, just behind
Pl. Real) No reservations accepted but two large floors usually means you don't have to wait too long.. Generalist restaurant but cheap, especially if you get their lunch menu...also try their brownie...very good! Lunch menu about 8euro. Open Mon - Sun from 1pm to 3:30pm and 8:30pm to 11:30pm Tel : 9 33 01 75 15 |
| L'Hostalet
de la Mamasita Avda Sarria 10 Not in the dead centre, but useful to know if you're in the area. Metro: Hospital Clinic (L5) Tel: 93 321 9296 |
| La
Rita: C/ Arago 279, (corner of Psg. de Gracia), Burberry shop side.
Tel: 93 487 2376 Another 3B restaurant. Always a lunchtime queue, so get there early (they open at 1pm). Their lunchtime menu is about 8 or 9euro but you'll feel like double checking for it looks as if it would be more expensive. They have a great dessert menu if you choose to go for something different than the menu. |
| Quinze
Nits: Plaza Reial 6 Lunch menu about 8euro. Open Mon - Sun from 1pm to 3:30pm and 8:30pm to 11:30pm...look for the queue in Plaza Reial...that'll be them. The place is huge and has a big outdoor terrace on the plaza. Ideally located. Metro: Liceu (L3) or Jaume I (L4) Tel: 93 317 3075 |
| TRADITIONAL, TAPAS |
Ciutat Comtal: :Rambla de Catalunya, 18 (with Gran Via) Teléfono :93.318.19.97 |
| Cerveceria
Catalana: Carrer Mallorca 236 (just off Rambla) Tel: 93 216 0368 Be prepared to queue but worth the wait. The same owners as Ciutat Comtal it is very famous. Good quality tapas. |
| El Vaso de Oro: C/Balboa 6 (Barceloneta)The enormous popularity of this long, narrow, cruise ship style-bar tells you everything you need to know about the tapas, but also means that he who hesitates is lost when it comes to ordering. |
El
Xampanyet: C/ Montcada 22., very near the Picasso Museum has
been operated by the same family since the 1930s |
| La
Flauta: C/ Aribau 23(with Consell de Cent) Renowned for its "Flautas" ie: hot and cold sandwiches made with a long, thin, crunchy baguette bread. (Apparently has another branch on Balmes 164). Open: Mon-Sat 1pm to 4:30pm and 8pm to 1am. Closed Sundays and August. Tel: 93 323 7038 |
| Universal
(Boqueria Market stall, as you enter on the far left) Tel: Doubt they have one and they don't take reservations so not much point in ringing! Great food, good variety, freshest produce and an incredibly delicious magic sauce (olive oil, and parseley) which they put on everything...could this be why it is called "Universal"?. Kiosko Universal has a 15euro set menu and you can choose among the many items written on the chalkboard. I always go for the mixed vegetables and a seafood / fish plate. Despite appearances, there is a queueing system, but it takes courage. You need to get the attention of the owner (Antonio) and signal the size of your group. Once he acknowledges you, he'll take mental note of your turn and, I don't know how he does it, but, will seat you in order. You can sip a beer or glass of wine as you wait. |
| PAELLA and SEAFOOD |
| Cheriff
for Paella: C/ Ginebra 15 (Barceloneta) Perhaps the best paella in Barcelona, a paella (for 2 people) will cost you about 25euro. Open from Tues to Sun, Cheriff is famous for its paella and fideua. Tel: 93 319 6984. |
| Tapelia for Paella: |
| La
Paradeta: C/Comercial 7, Born Tel: Superb seafood, served refectory style. Like going into a fish shop. You choose your fish or seafood and they cook it for you. Buy a drink and wait for your number to be called. A great experience for anyone not too grand to clear their own plate. Another branch near the Sagrada Familia . |
| SNACKS, CHURROS, HOT CHOCOLATE |
Granja M.Viader: C/ Xucla 4-6, behind Champion supermarket on the Ramblas. Opened in 1870, it served Barcelona's first Cacaolat. Popular for its hot chocolate and milindros (soft dunking buiscuit). Your grandmother will feel right at home. Tel: 93 318 3486 |
| La
Pallaresa: Famous for its hot chocolate and churros C/ Petritxol 11 Tel: 933 022 036 |
| Can Tomas for Patatas Bravas: In Sarria. You'll hear people say that these are the best Patatas Bravas in Barcelona. I have not been there, but many people say that it is now riding on its previous reputation. Still it is worth checking out just to see if their famous Bravas live up to reputation. |
| Can
Conesa: Bocadillos a la plancha ricos ricos. On plaza Sant Jaume.
May only be "sandwiches" but they make them in front of you, with
yummy ingredients, and grill them. If you've lived in Barcelona for a while, you'll
appreciate these even more! And about 5euro. Tel: 933 105 795 |

| Kikuchan
(Japanese): C/ Numancia 133 (w/ Trav. les Corts) near La Illa Shopping Centre Fantastic choice of lunchtime menus from 8euro. My favourite is the chicken. Definitely a 3B restaurant (bueno, bonito y barato). Many of the staff from the Japanese consulate on Diagonal come to this place so must be decent. Tel 93 419 1467 |
| Mosquito:
(Asian and Sushi): C/ Carders 46 (Born) Sushi menu 11.75euro. Tel: 93 268 7569 |
| Roma-Delhi
(Indian) C/ Montesny 13 (Gracia) Tel: 93 368 5413 This Indian restaurant could easily fit into the 3B category (Bueno, Bonito y Barato). I haven't been for over a year but their Butter Chicken was excellent. |
| Sushi-ya:
This authentic Japanese restaurant is Bueno and Barato (Good and Cheap),
unfortunately it is not Bonito (Pretty), still the price and central location
make up for the lack of aesthetics. C/ Quintana, just off C/ Ferran. The owner and chef is Japanese. Authentic Japanese food on the cheap. Used to be better but since they've gotten popular, many of their dishes are prepared before hand. Those that are not, eg: Spicy tuna roll, are still as good as it used to be. Sushi menu for 8.50€, Katsu-don menu, 6€. |
| Wushu
(Asian Fusion): Marqués d'Argentera nº1. (Born) Choose between Green or red Thai curries, Laksa, |
| SOMETHING DIFFERENT |
| El
Ethiope Abissima: Torrent dels Flors 55 Tel: 93 213 0785 Ethiopean restaurant in Gracia. Nice atmosphere. You sit on stools around a special straw table. Wash your hands before ordering you eat with your hands (no cutlery available). You order from the menu (vegetarians will find a lot to choose from) and your food is served in one same big round tray which fits into to specially designed table. Note, I insist it is one same tray for everyone, no division of what's mine or yours here. The food is served on ethiopian bread which you tear and use to pick up your food with....now you see why washing your hands before eaten is absolutely essential. Good for something different, the food is good, somewhat similar to Indian food. Just make sure you feel comfortable with your eating partners as there is a lot of sharing going on and women are expected to tear apart the chicken into bite size portions. I thought it was an interesting experience, good food but am not sure I would return as I found it very tricky to eat. Not expensive so worth a try. |
| A BIT FURTHER OUT, BUT YOU WON'T BE DISSAPPOINTED |
| La
